Gratitude

One day while we were sitting in the sun behind a shed, I asked Twy how to learn gratitude.  She replied that gratitude cannot be taught.  Then she told me about watching her grandfather each morning. The first thing he did upon arising was to walk to the door and greet the sun.  The doors to all Seneca homes face east, the rising sun.  Each morning he faced the sun and allowed himself a few minutes to feel the gratitude within.

Gratitude is the final step in the Applied Resonance Therapy process.  It is essential and you have no control over it.  It simply happens.  When you bring two energies in you together in resonance, that feeling, that aha moment, that…is gratitude.

The feeling of gratitude is unmistakable.  And that is when you know, without doubt, that you have made a change in your future.  It may take a several treatments before you feel it.  Some Energy Exercises you will do are primarily positioning exercises.  Nibbling away at a particularly complicated dissonance until you are ready to see the whole picture.  This is normal and your sense of gratitude will vary as a result – sometimes strong and sometimes indiscernible.

Don’t be discouraged if it takes some time to feel it.  We are familiar with feelings of appreciation but real gratitude that comes from within is not something that is part of our everyday lives.  It cannot be forced it can only be recognized as it is experienced.  As you do more Energy Exercises you’ll start to feel it.

Awareness of Gratitude

There are several good ways to help you be more aware of gratitude:  Dancing, journaling and conversation. 

Reggae Dancing

With dancing I recommend reggae music.  The varied rhythms of reggae are the perfect accompaniment to help your body adjust to the new vibrations it is experiencing.

To begin, put on some music with a good beat and conscious lyrics: Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff and Lucky Dube are excellent for beginners.  Start sitting in your chair.  Let your body move with the rhythm of the music.  Choose a slow beat to begin.  Rotate your shoulders; stretch your back, legs and arms.  Let your head bend to the side while keeping it straight on your neck – first to one side then the other.  As you move feel your muscles.  Where is there tension?  Breathe into the tension and let it release.

Next stand and move in the same way.  Reggae dancing is not about big movements, its about feeling the rhythm.  Again pick out a slow beat and move to that.  As you release dissonance, you body will respond with great ease of movement.  Reggae dancing is its reward as well as a clear indication of your progress.

Journaling

Journaling is a time honored process to clear our thoughts.  Write down the Energy Exercise you did and the results you felt.  This provides a log of your work as well as a place to check when something is confusing you about your next step.  Choose your own type of journaling.  Pick a blank book you like or make your own.  Choose a favorite pen or pencil, or use multiple colors.  Draw, write or paste in your thoughts.  This is for you, and by you.  No one needs to see it but you.

Conversation

Conversation is another way to be aware of gratitude.  Often when we share what we have learned, putting it into words helps us articulate essence of the experience.

Remember this is not a rambling discussion of your problems.  This is a focused story about your experience.  Choose two friends to share with you.  This works especially well when all three of you are doing the Energy Exercises.  You can get together to talk while you walk or do any other pleasant activity.  Pass a talking stick, physically or mentally, so each has the opportunity to speak without interruption.  While listening you are witnessing for the other person what they have experienced.  Remember when using a talking stick, respect and honoring are the only rules.
